PEWI PRESS COMMENTARY ON:“SUBSIDY IS BACK?” — NIGERIANS DESERVE MORE THAN POLITICAL SLOGANS

The reported promise by ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar to restore petrol subsidy if elected—and to recover funds from anyone who steals subsidy money—has reopened Nigeria’s long-running subsidy debate. But Nigerians should look beyond “subsidy is gone” versus “subsidy is back.”

The real questions are: Who pays? Who benefits? How much will it cost? Who audits it? And how will corruption be prevented? Subsidy removal does not eliminate government’s responsibility to protect vulnerable consumers. Equally, restoring subsidy does not constitute sound policy unless it is transparent, targeted, fiscally sustainable and properly governed.

Nigeria’s painful experience shows that recovering stolen subsidy funds after the fact is not enough. Good governance should prevent leakage through transparent pricing, verifiable volumes, independent audits, digital payment systems and full disclosure of subsidy claims.

With growing domestic refining capacity, Nigeria should also be moving toward a competitive downstream petroleum market in which domestic refining, efficient logistics and market competition progressively reduce the need for broad-based subsidies.

So, the choice Nigerians deserve is not simply: “Subsidy is gone” vs. “Subsidy is back. ”It is: Opaque intervention vs. transparent intervention. Rent seeking vs. public value. Political slogans vs. credible economic policy.

Whatever government chooses, the policy should pass four tests: EFFICIENCY • EFFECTIVENESS • EQUITY • ETHICS! Nigeria does not merely need a government capable of paying a subsidy. Nigeria needs a government capable of ensuring that every naira of public intervention creates measurable public value.
