The Botswana High Commission in Abuja, Nigeria, under the leadership of Her Excellency Ambassador Philda Kereng, opened a book of condolence in honour of the late former President of the Republic of Botswana, Dr. Festus Gontebanye Mogae, who passed away recently.
Dr. Festus Gontebanye Mogae, a renowned economist and statesman, served as the President of Botswana from 1998 to 2008. He was widely celebrated for his commitment to good governance, economic stability, democracy, and his remarkable leadership in the fight against HIV/AIDS across Africa.
During his tenure, Botswana maintained its reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies, while the nation’s economy and financial institutions experienced significant growth and prudent management. His dedication to accountable leadership, education, and sustainable development earned him global admiration and respect.
In recognition of his outstanding leadership and service to Africa, Dr. Mogae was awarded the prestigious Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership in 2008.
The condolence register at the Botswana High Commission in Maitama, Abuja, witnessed visits from several distinguished diplomats and dignitaries who came to pay their last respects. Among those who signed the condolence register were the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Nigeria, H.E. Mohammed Fouad, Ambassador of the Republic of Tanzania to Nigeria, H.E. Selestine Gervas Kakele Ambassador of the Republic Cuba to Nigeria, H E Miriam Morales Palmero, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Nigeria, H E Salem Saeed Al-Shamsi, Ambassador of the Ambassador of Italy to Nigeria, H.E Roberto Mengoni, Chief of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Amb. Wahab Adekola Akande, alongside many other members of the diplomatic community.
The condolence visit reflects the immense respect and admiration the international community had for the late former President, whose legacy of integrity, peaceful democratic leadership, and economic excellence continues to inspire Africa and the world.
